Kara Thrace was born on the planet Caprica to a military mother and a pianist father. When Kara was a child, her mother frequently abused her, and she came to see physical pain as a way of life. Once Kara was of age she left home to join the military, moving up the ranks to become a flight instructor. She was often disorderly and disobedient, earning more than one reprimand from superior officers. Nevertheless, her skills as a gifted pilot quickly eclipsed any other considerations. While working as a flight instructor she became involved with one of her students, Zak Adama. He asked her to marry him and she accepted. Zak was a poor pilot, however, and Kara allowed her personal feelings to blind her to that fact. She passed him even though his skills should in fact have caused him to fail Basic Flight. In his first flight after being certified, Zak was killed in an accident. Kara has never quite forgiven herself for this incident, and it has caused her many difficulties in her interpersonal relationships.

Kara resigned from flight instruction soon after Zak's death, taking a position as an active-duty pilot aboard the Battlestar Galactica. She held this position at the time the Cylons attacked the Twelve Colonies.
